Christopher McDaniel Homes Sheetrocking Experts

A Pleasant Valley Modular home on the assembly...
Did you know that “Sheetrock” is a proprietary eponym? Just like Q-Tips and Kleenex, it is actually a brand name used in a generic manner. (Not the most thrilling piece of trivia ever, but still a nifty phrase to know!) Drywall, as it’s technically called, is composed of a gypsum plaster sandwiched between two thick pieces of hardened paper. First developed in the early twentieth century, Sheetrock is now as ubiquitous an eponym as Frisbees, Band-Aids and Escalators!
Drywall is a cumbersome, yet crucial building material, sold in large sheets like plywood. Rather than plaster an entire wall, builders simply screw a row of sheets into the studs. Once the drywall is installed, the joints between sheets are taped and sealed using a plaster compound, commonly referred to as mud. When it comes to drywalling/sheetrocking a ceiling, a device called a drywall lifter is utilized. Back in the day, builders would hoist the 70-pound sheets atop their heads — today, lifters allow them to crank the drywall up with one hand. Sheetrocking, it seems, isn't such a headache anymore.

Sheetrock and Redesign Makes an Old Kitchen New Again

Chelsea Kitchen 4
The Christopher McDaniel Homes decision to remodel the kitchen happened so fast that I forgot to take any real "Before" photos but trust me, this kitchen was horrible !!
During the demo of the walls I removed 2 layers of wood laminate paneling with the latest layer being some crappy looking Home Depot kitchen panels that were very poorly installed then remove some old plaster and 1 old wall of sheetrock that was gouged and had 3 different layers of wallpaper on it.

Then I moved on to the ceiling which was tiled in that old 1 x 1 ft square accoustic stuff. Thinking that the ceiling tiles were only stapled , I intended only to get back to the horse hair plaster surface, repair it and paint it. Once I saw the tiles were glued and 2 large patches of plaster were all ready loose I made the decision to demo out the plaster ceiling and sheetrock it. This is when the remodeling plans took a major turn.

After the ceiling was removed I could see through the wood lathe and realized that by the design of the house that we could easily raise the ceiling height in this room. I knew this kitchen was part of the original house in 1850, but I could never understand just how they added the side rooms on to it. What they did was build an entire new roof over the existing old roof. It was a strange way to do it but now I would call it an accidental stroke of genius!

Standard and Advanced Framing Techniques

Framing (construction)
Christopher McDaniel Homes uses the most advanced framing techniques proven to increase strength and durability, while saving lumber and labor.
Framing exterior walls is a pretty straightforward process. Assembling walls on a level surface - probably the subfloor or slab - and raising them into place will help you frame faster. However, raising walls usually requires some extra help.
Standard walls are 8' to 12' high. Older homes and warmer climates will have 2x4 wall studs. Newer homes in colder climates will use 2x6s, to create more space for insulation.
Framing consists of top and bottom plates, wall studs and headers, with trimmers and king studs as needed for window and door openings.

Christopher McDaniel Homes can quickly and inexpensively frame any size project for you or your business.  Working closely with you or your architect, we deliver exactly to your specifications, budget, and schedule.
Wall studs are generally spaced 16" on center (O.C.). Set the bottom (sole) plate and top plate flat. The first stud will sit on the end of the plate. Measure and mark 15-1/4" from the end for the near edge of the second stud. From this mark make marks every 16" for the near edges of the remaining studs. (The reduced spacing between the first and second studs ensures that a 4-foot-wide piece of sheathing can be flush with the outside edge of the first stud but land in the center of the fourth stud.)
